This is the first I have heard of this "feature" and I had assumed that the friend I have just started sharing my Plex library with was able to download files. I set up the share precisely to do this as there is no way he is going to be able to stream using my ADSL uplink.
At the moment we just share USB sticks if I have something he wants to watch and vice versa, I thought Plex would be a good alternative, Plex should be a good alternative. My other option is to share a drive with him on my mac, something I don't really want to do but if I did Apple are not going to stop me doing it, are they?
Surely there is a better way that you can proceed with this? Think about exactly what that would enable and I think it's pretty clear why we can't allow it. Its legal in several countries, to "share" a stream of a media that you legally own, with friends provided its not for commercial use.
Much like if you had 5 friends over to watch a movie you bought. I want to share my music with one of my friends so he can download it. Why not have users tick a disclaimer when using the software negating your own liability and let users decide whether they want to enable downloading or not? As per the previous comments, you can do this with gdrive or dropbox etc… so why not let paid users decide for themselves?
Seems draconian to me…. I don't think from a legal or liability standpoint this would be an issue for Plex. Other media center type solutions offer it without conflict, for example Subsonic. There's so many features that Plex has that Subsonic doesn't, which is why I decided to make the switch.
Plex appears to be the best solution for what I need, however I am bummed to just now realize that raw files can not be downloaded on the web interface for shared content. I also don't see any download links for music for my login Within Subsonic users can download individual files, or Subsonic will zip multiple files automatically if you wanted to download an album or all albums from a certain artist.
I only use Bookmarklet myself, but it looks like there was a Plex update in August Hey Lucas — Try this one instead. Thank you so much! Unfortunately because of the last Plex update it does not work as before downloading from one server but not the other.
I hope people come up with something that gets around that because streaming sucks. Have you ever tried using a download manager to get movies from a Plex server? Like IDM. I wish it was as fast as the bookmarklet thing though. Kind of. Maybe because of Plex update. Found a Bookmarklet alternative that works just like the old. Edit: Unfortunately still nothing with the updated Plex server. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Get notified of any replies to your comment.
